• Are you filling up the tank a little more than usual?
  • Does the gas seem to not last as long?
  • Have you’ve noticed an unusual odor coming from your vehicle?

Although a number of issues can affect a vehicle’s performance, an alarming sign that your vehicle may need an exhaust evaluation can be as simple hearing a noisy change.

1.Don’t Tune Your Exhaust Out

Listen and observe what your car is telling you. One of the most obvious symptoms of an exhaust issue would be an excessively loud exhaust. If there is a crack or break in the pipes, a leak will cause a loud hissing or tapping sound that can become more noticeable when the vehicle is accelerated. This also may cause a vibration in the vehicle’s steering wheel, car seat or foot pedals.

2. What’s That Smell?

Have you ever been driving along and minding your own business when all of a sudden you get a whiff of rotten eggs? Chances are it is not your passenger but a failing catalytic converter.  The conversion of gasoline to hydrogen sulfide in a catalytic converter is a normal and odorless process. However, a bad smell indicates the cat is no longer doing it’s job and your vehicle will need to be seen by a mechanic asap.

3. “I just don’t have the power”

Are you having to press a little to hard on the gas pedal? If a vehicle is having an issue with power or acceleration, this could signal a potential issue with damaged or corroded exhaust tubes or pipes. When the exhaust has a leak, a vehicle will experience a loss of back-pressure. This can be evident in poor engine performance.

4. Getting gas…already?!

How often are you having to stop for gas? Have you noticed a decrease in your MPG? An efficient exhaust system will allow you to have optimal miles per gallon. If you are having to stop for gas more frequently, you may be experiencing poor exhaust performance. Having a well-tuned exhaust can save your fuel economy.

Remember – Be aware of the importance of having a well maintained exhaust system. Waiting and ignoring the issue can cause a higher repair bill and further vehicle damage.
